As time passes and technology advances, the grimy, cigarette-stained laminate countertops of the past have made way for a wide variety of styles and textures, all at a price far more affordable than granite or metal. Whether you’re looking for a sleek solid color, a complex granite pattern, or even a wood finish, Delorie Countertops & Doors has the experience and know-how to create the laminate dream you’ve been looking for.

What is Laminate?
Westinghouse started experimenting with layered resins. Their theory was that combining several thin layers of resin would result in a much stronger product than a single, thick layer of resin by itself, and they were right. They left Westinghouse to form a new company, Formica, and the rest is history.
Today, laminate countertops are made by combining several layers of resin and paper to create a single sheet of laminate. First, the top layers are made of clear plastic and paper and protect the texture and color of the decorative sheet in the middle layers. Finally, the bottom layers are made up of sturdy Kraft paper and plywood and keep the laminate in place.
Why is Laminate a Good Choice for Countertops?
There are a few reasons why laminate is an increasingly popular choice for countertop materials. The first is its flexibility. Laminate can be made in a wide variety of colors, finishes, and textures, making it easy to add to any style of decor. This means it can be used in almost any room of the house that requires a countertop. It’s also extremely easy to work with and can be cut into any shape you can imagine – even forms with sharp corners or complicated cut-outs. In addition to its flexibility, laminate is also highly durable and is less likely to chip or break than a granite countertop. Finally, laminate countertops are easily the most cost-effective option, with an average price of between $35 and $40 a foot at retail.
Where Can I Use Laminate Countertops?
While most of the laminate installation we do is in kitchens, at Delorie Countertops & Doors, we’re happy to help you install countertops in any room of the house. The flexibility of laminate makes it a great choice for any countertop space you might need. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Besides these, laminate can also be used in office alcoves, shelving, or even as a furniture surface. Whatever your ideas are, at Delorie Countertops & Doors we’re here to help you turn them into a reality.
How Do I Maintain a Laminate Countertop?
Once your laminate countertop has been installed, it’s pretty easy to maintain it and keep it presentable. Laminate can be cleaned like any other countertop surface with a damp cloth or sponge. For tougher stains, you can use standard household cleaners or even bleach as long as you wipe it away afterward. Like pretty much any material, prolonged exposure to bleach will cause staining on laminate, so make sure you’re using it carefully.
What Kind of Laminate Should I Use?
Unlike many countertop materials, there’s not a ton of difference between high and low-end laminate. Ultimately, the biggest differences are going to be seen in the finish of the material. High-end laminate has a wider variety of colors and textures and generally has a brighter and more lustrous sheen.
Are There Any Downsides to Laminate Countertops?
Like any countertop material, laminate has both pros and cons. We’ve already gone over some of the positive aspects of laminate, like the price, the durability, and the flexibility and variety of colors, but what about the negatives?

The next generation of laminate countertops is here with HPL (High Pressure Laminate) technology. HPL countertops are scratch, heat, stain, and impact resistant. This makes them a durable and low-maintenance choice for kitchens.
Multiple layers of kraft paper are fused with phenolic resin to make HPLs. After the printed décor layer is put on top, the laminated sheet is fused under high heat and pressure. The way the product is made requires high temperatures to make connections that are very strong. This makes the product very durable.
HPL comes in an array of colors and patterns, which can be mixed and matched with edging, backsplashes, and other design elements to create a one-of-a kind countertop.
